<image:caption>Maj. Mark T. Seacrest (front row, 6th from left) and Capt. Jack M. Hamilton (also front row, 8th from left) share this important moment of transition in leadership for the 3rd Bomb Squadron. Maj. Seacrest had received his orders to return to the US only days before, and Capt. Hamilton was preparing to assume command as his replacement. My dad, then-Sgt. James H. Mills, is standing below A/C #714’s “greenhouse nose” (8th from left). He remembered flying missions with both of these commanding officers and attested to their superior skills as pilots and as leaders. <image:caption>The Rohna (seen here in prewar service with the British India Steam Navigation Company), was overloaded with US troops and steaming through the Mediterranean along “Suicide Alley” when she was attacked by German Luftwaffe bombers. Hit by an early "smart bomb"—a Henschel Hs-293 radio-controlled, rocket-boosted glide bomb—the ship received catastrophic damage that led to the tragic deaths of more than a thousand of those onboard. For decades afterward, all parties involved kept details of the attack a carefully-guarded secret. Public Domain</image:caption>

The Flying Tigers of the U. S. Army 14th Air Force in China. The emblem is shown here as it was presented to Major General Claire Chennault, Commanding General, 14th Air Force, center, by Sgt. <image:caption>Although others sometimes accompanied him, TSgts. Ewell F. Wilkerson (left) and John P. Barge (right) were my father’s most frequent companions on outings into town or nearby villages. Their shared adventures whenever they could obtain passes included sampling the fare of local restaurant and shopping for souvenirs, as well as rickshaw rides and trans-mountain journeys by sedan chair. Separated from their families by many thousands of miles during the holidays, Barge, Wilkerson, and my dad, Sgt. James H. (“Hank”) Mills, celebrated the arrival of the New Year in Chungking. The three men worked closely together and had much in common, including their Southern heritage. Originally from Alabama before moving to Georgia, Barge was, like Hank, a crew chief and married. Frasier Wilkerson, a flight chief, was from Mississippi. "We always called him 'Wilkie,’” J. H. Mills collection</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a typical wartime photograph, taken in Kunming. It was one of my dad’s collection, most of them sent home to my mom during the war. The Green Rooster Arch stands in the foreground, and the Golden Horse Arch is visible in the background. I know that my dad passed through here when he arrived in China with his squadron in early September 1944, but I have no other information about this photo. On a recent visit to China, I was thrilled to glimpse these two historic and beautiful arches through the moonlight one evening as we passed through the city.</image:caption>
